Pure relaxation on a private island resort, Cape Fahn

After more traveling than vacationing, we decided to slow down the pace and switch to relaxation mode at a private island resort called Cape Fahn on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand.

Kauai, Hawaii, USA

A resort & a remote cabin on the "garden island"

We chose Kauai, of all the Hawaiian islands, because we wanted to experience a less-touristy destination with a diverse landscape, fresh food, and opportunity for adventure. It is the 4th largest and oldest of the main Hawaiian islands and offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for resorts or off-the-beaten path accommodations with no service. We chose to mix it up and experience the best of both with a few nights at a 5-star resort and a few nights at a minimalistic cabin in the middle of Kokee State Park.

Aoraki / Mount Cook, New Zealand

Mountains & glaciers galore

Aoraki / Mount Cook is not to be missed on your New Zealand itinerary. The village sits within Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand’s tallest mountain, Mount Cook, and its largest glacier, Tasman Glacier. It is accessible for all visitors, not just mountaineers, as a road leads directly to the village and there are both camping and hotel accommodations. Although, if you’re looking for restaurants and civilization, you’ll need to go south to Twizel or Lake Tekapo. The drive is stunning, taking you right up the shores of Lake Pukaki, and the destination is even more awe-inspiring with its high mountain peaks and hanging glaciers.

Jackson Bay, New Zealand

We posted up for the evening at an off-the-beaten-path freedom camping spot in Jackson Bay, the quaintest fishing village with an interesting history, a great seafood shack, nearby nature walks, and breathtaking scenery.

We took the train ~2 hours from Kyoto to Komatsu, a city nestled between the Sea of Japan and the sacred, Mt Hakusan. During our 3-day, 2-night excursion, we stayed at one of the oldest hotels in the world, experienced a private Buddhist prayer session at the picturesque Natadera Temple, were pampered at Natadera’s affiliated mountaintop retreat, and stumbled across surprising gems, like the Motorcar Museum of Japan and Komatsu’s museum of machinery.

We embarked on a weeklong road trip through Jamaica with 2 of our best friends, starting in Jamaica's capital, Kingston, and spending time in Treasure Beach and Negril before eventually departing from Montego Bay.

Doubtful Sound vs. Milford Sound

The first thing we learned is that their names are incorrect – both Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound are fjords, not sounds. Fjords are carved by glaciers and sounds are carved by rivers. The drive from Manapouri (the launch point to visit Doubtful Sound) to Milford Sound is only 2 hours, so we decided to check both out. In a nutshell, if you have time, they are both worth seeing, but the real gem is the drive between Manapouri and Milford Sound.

Top spots from a 2-week RV exploration

We picked up our small RV in Queenstown, after indulging in many thrill-seeking, slightly terrifying activities, and hit the road for almost 2 weeks, traversing between the South Island’s stunning, well-known spots like Milford Sound and its lesser-known, but equally beautiful, gems like Mavora Lakes, the Southern Scenic Route, and Jackson Bay, ultimately ending in Christchurch.

Blurring the line between life and death

We spent 2 nights in Varanasi, a city of death, and one of the oldest, most spiritual places on the planet. We stayed at the beautiful BrijRama Palace, built in the early 1800s and located at the foot of the Ganges River. Life in Varanasi is centered around the sacred Ganges - prayer sessions, boat rides, and even an outdoor crematorium that has been in operation for 3,000 years - all take place at its shores.
